The Amtrak plans seem pretty adamant about bypassing that as well.

There's no way to adequately straighten out that curve as far as I can tell without pretty significant takings.Liamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3300947294999806492.post-17981266497740014192012-09-18T12:39:03.735-04:002012-09-18T12:39:03.735-04:00Sandy,

I mentioned the speed argument in that post and countered that Zoo's time cost is being oversold.

That said, Zoo does have a very real time cost, and the only way to ameliorate it is to, well, bypass it. And the only way to bypass Zoo is to build a new Schuylkill crossing.Steve Stofkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14825368520377993845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3300947294999806492.post-40564537031626313822012-09-18T02:04:05.031-04:002012-09-18T02:04:05.031-04:00I thought that part of the reason the tunnel is be...I thought that part of the reason the tunnel is being promoted was speed, not capacity; while HSR trains would definitely not be operating at top speed this close to the station, I think they'd certainly be operating faster than trains currently do through Zoo. And since the tracks from 30th Street must negotiate the tightest of the curves through the interlocking, there's not much that could be done without some major reengineering. What would the solution be to that? (Just asking. I'm already on the record as a tunnel skeptic.)Sandy Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02103308628580509809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3300947294999806492.post-27045882540580273692012-09-17T20:07:25.615-04:002012-09-17T20:07:25.615-04:00I didn't know there's room for a fifth tra...I didn't know there's room for a fifth track on the Schuylkill Bridge!

The potential definitely lies in the space for a third (or even fourth) track just on the approaches immediately north and south of the station.Liamnoreply@blogger.com
